MV Air Circuit Breaker Test
A NETA and IEEE C37.09-compliant field test record for medium-voltage air circuit breakers — covering insulation resistance (with PI and DAR options), contact and bolted connection resistance (μΩ), contact travel/gap/wipe, operating speed, pole spread and simultaneity, coil current/voltage, and deficiency tracking — with multi-record support, clone, JSON export, and print-to-PDF.
Overview
Medium-voltage air circuit breaker testing demands a more rigorous test record than its LV counterpart — IEEE C37.09 and C37.09a add operating speed, travel and wipe measurements, and pole spread/simultaneity requirements that are not part of LV testing, and the insulation resistance protocol extends to Polarization Index and Dielectric Absorption Ratio readings requiring 10-minute and timed ratio measurements. This tool captures the complete MV ACB test record across seven tabs. The Header tab documents job information, test type (acceptance, maintenance, commissioning), primary standard (ANSI/NETA ATS-2025, ANSI/NETA MTS-2023, NFPA 70B-2026, IEEE C37.09/C37.09a, OEM manual, project specification), additional standard references, equipment calibration dates, and technician qualification. Breaker nameplate fields include manufacturer, type, model, serial number, maximum voltage (kV), interrupting capacity (kA), ampacity (A), operating voltage (kV), and date manufactured. The Visual/Mechanical Checklist tab walks through inspection items with Pass/Fail/N/A entry. The Insulation tab records applied test voltage, reading duration and type (1-Minute, 10-Minute PI, 60/30 DAR, Spot), acceptance basis, and measured values. The Contacts & Mechanical tab captures breaker state, pole spread and simultaneity for both close and open operations in milliseconds, mechanical operation count at test start and end, manual and electrical open/close operation results, aux contact/MOC/TOC verification, and trip coil voltage and current. The Settings tab records relay and trip unit settings. The Deficiencies tab logs all findings. The Report tab generates the printable record. A unique multi-record capability allows cloning a completed record for additional breakers in a switchgear lineup — reducing re-entry for repeat configurations. Records save to localStorage, export and import as JSON, and print to PDF.
Inside the lab
What you'll do
- 01Document complete MV air circuit breaker nameplate data including maximum voltage (kV), interrupting capacity (kA), ampacity, operating voltage, and date manufactured
- 02Select and apply the correct insulation resistance test method — 1-minute, 10-minute (Polarization Index), 60/30 (DAR), or spot reading — and record results against the applicable acceptance basis
- 03Record contact and bolted connection resistance in μΩ, contact travel/gap/wipe dimensions, and operating speed per IEEE C37.09 requirements
- 04Measure and document pole spread and simultaneity for both close and open operations in milliseconds, and evaluate results against manufacturer and standard tolerances
- 05Record trip coil voltage and current, aux contact and MOC/TOC verification, and mechanical operation count as-found and as-left
- 06Clone a completed breaker record for additional units in a lineup, export all records to JSON for archiving, and print formatted reports for client delivery
